Police officer faces charges after incident at home, alleged DUI
In the Central Valley, law enforcement is called when crimes have occurred or are already in progress. Common incidents include driving under the influence and domestic violence. Officers are expected to investigate, deal with the situation and make arrests if it is warranted. In some cases, however, a law enforcement officer is the one accused of wrongdoing. This can not only cause legal problems, but professional ones as well. One recent case in which a detective was arrested is an example of this.
Detective arrested for DUI and domestic violence
A local detective who investigates violent crimes was arrested herself for a domestic incident with her husband. She was also arrested for DUI. The 31-year-old is a six-year veteran of the force. Her husband contacted law enforcement after there was a dispute at their residence. He too is a police officer. She was driving when officers stopped her. She resisted their attempts to subdue her and it is unclear if she informed them that she was a police officer. She was released approximately three hours after she was booked. The police department placed her on administrative leave while the case is being investigated.
DUI and domestic violence can result in substantial consequences
Being charged with DUI can have a negative impact on a person’s life in myriad ways. Depending on the details of the case, there can be a driver’s license suspension, fines, jail time, the requirement that the person take part in classes and install an ignition interlock device on their vehicle. Domestic violence accusations can result in penalties of their own. The person could be put on probation, subjected to a restraining order, be fined, need to take part in programs designed to prevent domestic violence and more. In addition, a conviction for these crimes will likely prevent getting or retaining certain jobs. This is a major concern for this law enforcement officer.
A comprehensive defense against DUI and domestic violence charges is critical
This case is unique in that it is a police officer who was arrested. Still, anyone who is confronted with legal problems related to DUI, domestic violence and any other criminal accusation should be cognizant of the basics of criminal defense. From the start, it is essential to assess the case and determine the preferable path forward whether that is pursuing a plea bargain, thinking about whether the evidence is strong and weighing the prospects for an acquittal. Before saying or doing anything, having experienced advice is key.
