When there is an auto accident in Hanford and across the Central Valley, law enforcement will likely consider the possibility that a driver was under the influence. If there is an arrest and charges for driving under the influence, many penalties can be assessed including jail time, fines and a driver’s license suspension. Other charges can be lodged if the driver refuses a breath test, is uncooperative or even tries to flee the scene. Understanding viable strategies to formulate a strong criminal defense is key in any of these circumstances.

Accident leads to DUI charges

A 51-year-old man was arrested for DUI and other charges after he crashed his car into a residence. Law enforcement had already been called about a reckless driver before the accident. After the crash, the driver got out of the vehicle and fled. Witnesses informed law enforcement of the man’s location.

He was attempting to enter a home. He was ordered to come to the fence at the residence, but he did not comply. Officers scaled the fence and detained the man. Two officers were injured as they climbed the fence. The man was placed under arrest for multiple charges including DUI, fleeing the scene of an accident, and restricting or obstructing law enforcement.

A criminal conviction can negatively impact a person’s life

DUI convictions can cause many problems for a person’s future. Not only can it result in a loss of freedom with a jail sentence and cost a person his or her driving privileges, but it can inhibit their ability to get certain jobs. When other charges are added and they include resisting arrest and hit-and-run, the potential severity rises significantly. Although these allegations are serious, it does not automatically mean that a conviction is guaranteed. There are strategies to combat the charges and achieve a positive result.

Legal assistance can be critical

In this case, the man was said to have been driving recklessly before he collided with a residence. He was then accused of trying to run from law enforcement and resisting arrest. Even with this litany of charges, perhaps he can call the DUI allegation into question. There may be medical issues that resulted in his behavior. A plea bargain with treatment could be a worthwhile alternative to explore. Before doing or saying anything, this man and anyone else in a similar situation should be aware of the avenues of criminal defense that can be effective and consult with a firm experienced in DUI and other criminal charges.
